NEWS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yavapai County School Superintendent Tim Carter is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Wayne Overson, to the Bagdad Unified School District Governing Board. The appointment will be effective February 16, 2022 and will expire on December 31, 2022. This seat was vacant due to the fact that Board Member Thomas Owings, resigned without giving a specific reason. We appreciate the efforts Mr. Owings put forward in supporting students and the community while a member of the Governing Board.
Mr. Overson is a graduate of Bagdad High School. He is married and the couple have resided in Bagdad for nine (9) years. The couple have two (2) children, one has graduated and a 7th grader is still in the school district. Mr. Overson served in the United States Marine Corp., is a former employee of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, and is currently employed by Williamson Valley Bagdad Fire Department as a firefighter/emergency medical technician. He has been active for many years in Bagdad youth football and little league, where he coaches and serves on the Board of Directors.
Mr. Carter believes “Mr. Overson understands the role of the Governing Board and will work to balance the needs of students, parents, staff, and the taxpayer. He appears to relate to all segments of the community and should work well with his fellow Board Members”.
Mr. Carter accepted letters of interest and interviewed the applicant on February 14th. He then spoke individually with each of the seated members of the Governing Board, members of the school staff and administration, and several area residents prior to making the appointment.
Mr. Overson has indicated he does intend to run for this seat in the 2022 election cycle for a new term starting in 2023. That process entails pulling a packet, filing a statement of intent to run, being issued a serial number from the Yavapai County Education Service Agency, and circulating petitions prior to being declared a qualified candidate in early summer.
Mr. Carter may be reached at 928-925-6560 (cell) and Mr. Overson may be reached at 928-899-9729.
